Jack is a Free Spirit

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

By Arwen McGilvra & Pablo Villagran

I’d like you to meet a free-spirited little six-year-old. Jack is an active little boy living in our home who likes to play tag, sing songs, and go on field trips with our mission teams. He loves pancakes and the colors red and blue. He likes to kiss and hug his teacher and Special Mothers, who say that overall Jack is obedient, sensitive, and loving.

Children come to our home for a variety of reasons — most are sad … tragic, even. But some are puzzling. That’s the case with Jack. He was moved to Dorie’s Promise from a government home: he and another boy there looked so much alike, even had the same name, that they kept being confused with each other. So it was decided to separate them. Jack has been at Dorie’s Promise for almost a year now.

Sometimes when the children come to us, we do not have much information about their past or about the situations in which they lived. When Jack arrived, we were only told that he needed to be transferred from the state orphanage. We attended different hearings in the process, but never learned much about his family.

That recently changed when we were informed that he has family living about 10 hours away … and they want Jack back. Not knowing much about his family leaves us with a lot of questions.

  • What will his life be like with family members he doesn’t know?
  • Will they be able to provide a safe home and good education for him?
  • Will it be difficult for him to adjust to his new life?

In the last hearing, we asked the judge to give us the chance to keep Jack at Dorie’s Promise until he finishes the school year. We are praying for Jack, for his family, and for the decision that will be made in the next hearing.

Above all, we want the children here to be in a safe home with love and care.

While he’s been here, Jack has blossomed into a talkative, outgoing boy who is full of curiosity. He enjoys participating in devotionals. He is a good observer and pays special attention to small details. Jack has a tender heart — which can sometimes lead to temper tantrums, but he is learning to control those outbursts. His special mothers have a song they sing to help him calm down. It’s called Cuando Obedezco, or, I Will Obey.

(or in English)

When I obey what Jesus says
I become strong and grow to hear His voice
and if the devil says not to obey
I will ignore him and I will obey!
When I obey what my daddy says I
become strong and grow to hear his voice
and if the devil says not to obey
I will ignore him and I will obey!
When I obey what my mommy says
I become strong and grow to hear her voice
and if the devil says not to obey
I will ignore him and I will obey!

For the time that Jack is still with us, he needs the support of sponsors. People who have a heart for children like Jack — children who have been forgotten by a wider world. When you sponsor Jack, you are reaching out to an orphan in need.

Dorie’s Promise Guatemala is a place filled with love and care. It is a place where joy is a daily experience, and where orphaned children find safety and security. But most of all, it is a place where children who have never known love can grow up knowing that God loves them no matter what and has a plan for their lives.

Thank you for being part of our family and for caring for Jack!

Meet Dolce Maria

Wednesday, April 24th, 2013

Dulce is a very special child to us — she was born premature, so we have been closely watching her growth. There has been an incredible progress in Dulce’s health, thanks to the care of the special mothers and special attention from our doctor. She is a fighter — she has been fighting to survive ever since she was born. Her special mother Myriam prays every day for Dulce’s life. Since coming to Dorie’s Promise she has gained a few pounds and has better movement of her arms and legs.

She is starting to babble; whenever we put her on a bed she loves to turn around. Even thought she is very small the staff love picking her up and playing with her. Although she smiles less than the other babies, she is an observer, always watching whats happening around her. She loves her bath time and is more and more accepting of affection. We often talk to her and ask her questions; she responds by smiling or cooing. Her favorite drink is soy milk. She loves playing in her crib or just being held by her special mothers Janeth and Myriam. We think she is such a cute baby.

Pray with us for her continued development, and that she would not have developmental delays due to her premature birth. Please take some time to get to know Dulce on our site. She is currently only 40 percent sponsored. Over the next few months, we would love to see that reach 100 percent. We also would love to have you come to Guatemala City to see Dulce for yourself.

A Heart Warming Story

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013

By Bradley Burck-

Sometimes you hear stories about people doing things to help the children at Dorie’s Promise that just warm your heart and make you proud. This is one that I know will bless you. It is the story of a mom who visited our orphaned children in Guatemala City last year and how her children caught the vision for helping children in need.

Donating Through Dinner, Kickstarting the Heart

So let me get this straight: I worked for four hours and we can sponsor an orphan for five months?!” he said as he did the math of their proceeds. Read The Whole Story

Meet Franco

Thursday, February 14th, 2013

There is a little guy we want you to meet. His name is Franco, and he’s been at Forever Changed International’s home for orphans — Dorie’s Promise Guatemala — for the last several months. We wrote about his sister, and her love for her brother, a few weeks ago.

His special mothers, Ericka, Rosana, Ingrid, and Eliza, want you to get to know him a bit…

“Franco is smart and loves to exercise, run, and play with the other children. He has learned to follow instructions and now pays more attention to the rules. Just by looking at his face, we can see that he is happier being here. He still struggles with not being in the same room with his two sisters. He doesn’t like to lose or share his toys, but he has learned to respect our daily routines and schedules. He is a very helpful child. Franco knows lots of praise songs and enjoys listening to Bible stories. Whenever he learns a new song, he memorizes it so he can teach it to others later. The first time we took him to Chuck E. Cheese, his face lit up — now he always says how wonderful that field trip was. He also has a soft spot for candy.”

Claudia Roncal, our onsite teacher says, “Franco is a very cute boy! He is making a big effort in getting used to the structure and routine that attending school involves. He is working so hard and even receives extra help at home and school. Considering this is the first time he is exposed to a very safe and organized environment (school and house), these little difficulties are normal. Franco has been here for a very short time, so he is still in an adaptation process.”

Our director of Dorie’s Promise Guatemala, Alej Diaz, says, “Franco is a great kid — I love seeing him smile. He is very active, and I know that any time I visit he will give me a big hug and kiss. He is so special. We need to pray for him. A lot has happened in his life the last several months, and we don’t have much information about his background or how his life was before coming to Dorie’s Promise. But what we do know is that seeing Hilary leave with her father, and Franco having to accept that he must stay here, is not easy for him. He just started receiving psychological support, so we’re hopeful it will help him through these changes in his life.”

Please take some time to get to know Franco on our site. He is currently 40 percent sponsored. Over the next few months, we would love to see that reach 100 percent. We also would love to have you come to Guatemala City to visit him and his sister!

Meet Maria Jose

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

Here is a precious child we want you to meet. Her name is Maria Jose. According to her Special Mothers, Diana, Ingrid, and Lorena, Maria Jose is a wonderful little girl.

She has a great heart and a strong desire to be loved. She has long beautiful black hair and really likes having it combed and styled. Right now, she is losing her baby teeth, so when she smiles there are big gaps in it. Her smile is something we see a lot because it shines when she gets to help around the house. Right now, she jumps at the chance to help with house chores.

Keeping up with Maria is tough. She is full of energy and runs everywhere. She gets along well with the other girls in the home, but recently we’ve had a couple of little girl spats that have left Maria’s feelings a tad hurt. Despite that, she still loves the other girls and goes out of her way to be playful and loving with them.

Maria told us recently that she loves God and that she believes He has a plan for her life, as well as all the boys and girls at Dorie’s Promise Guatemala. It is such a blessing to listen to little Maria Jose sing, pray, and listen to God’s Word.

School is one of those things that Maria Jose is excited about. She is going to a new school and is thrilled with the new friends and teachers and all the activities.

Please be praying for Maria Jose. Here are a few things her Special Mothers want you to know:

  • Maria Jose is missing Hilary, one of her siblings. Hilary recently left Dorie’s Promise, and Maria Jose is desperately missing her.
  • Pray for her and her brother, Franco. Ask God to deepen that relationship.
  • Ask God to give Maria Jose a sense of safety and hope at Dorie’s Promise Guatemala.

Here are a few things we’ve learned about Maria Jose in the last few weeks:

  • Her favorite food: chicken and fries
  • Her favorite drink: soda
  • Her favorite activities: dodgeball and soccer
  • Her favorite colors: yellow and turquoise
  • Her best qualities: forgiving, loving, and being very helpful

We are thrilled to have Maria Jose with us. We want you to come to Guatemala and visit us. Consider taking  a Missions Trip with us. If you are feeling a leading to sponsor Maria Jose, you should do it. As of the writing of this blog, she is only 32 percent sponsored.

Sponsor her today!

Results for You!

4405858264_b6327b033b_oI want to give you an update on the education fund we have been writing about for the last few weeks.  Over the weekend we hit our goal!  We actually exceeded it by nearly $2,000.  We plan to use these additional dollars to help our teacher Claudia work with a few of the children who need extra help.  Thank you to everyone who gave and prayed for this.  We are so excited about what this means for our children in the coming school year.  THANK YOU!

As we are at the end of 2012, I want to ask that if you haven’t given a special gift yet to consider doing so right nowOur medical fund is severely underfunded for 2013.  We are short by $15,000.  This causes me concern going into the next year, and I want to ask for your help.

If you have already given this year, thank you.  Just disregard this email.  If you haven’t yet, please consider doing something special.  Give so we can maintain the quality medical care we provide our children.

All gifts received before 12pm tonight will be regarded as 2012 gifts for tax purposes.   Let’s end the year well by knocking out this last $15,000.

Sincerely,

Heather Radu

Christmas Celebration

By Pablo Villagran-

One of the highlights of this Christmas season was the visit this past week of a team from Crest Baptist Church in Creston, Iowa. Director Alejandra Diaz says the entire staff appreciates the love they and others demonstrated for our children this season.

Christmas CelebrationThrough the years she has seen how each Christmas is different, with special people thinking of various ways to make this season significant for the kids.

“For us, this is how God moves in different ways, showing us that He is always there,” Alejandra says. “Thank you very much to all the people who make our Christmas special every year and of course to the friends who came this year."

“For several of the children it was their first Christmas with us. We wanted to make it memorable for them, because it was difficult for them to be away from their families and friends. We wanted to show them how special they are.”

This was a particularly special Christmas for three former residents, who went to new adoptive families in Guatemala and celebrated their first holiday with them.

This past year has been filled with other highlights for Dorie’s Promise. Among them were completing two phases of our backyard renovation project, including the installation of a new playset.

We were also blessed to see three of our children complete their first year at the El Shaddai private school, with eight more joining them in January.

As we move into 2013, Alejandra is encouraged by our ability to offer a better quality education to all of our children. She also hopes to see more missionaries next year after a 41 percent increase this year, with visits going up from 216 last year to 369 in 2012.

New Playset“We reached more people through our outreach program into the ghetto and the dump,” she notes. “We placed about 40 pilas (water stations) into homes at the dump, installed six cement floors and distributed around 100 water filters.”

During the coming year, Alejandra hopes to enhance training, since staff members are the key to providing care and educational opportunities for our children. And, she wants to continue sending as many mission teams as possible into the ghetto, since that helps build relationships while blessing our community.

One area that needs continued growth is our sponsorship program, which hasn’t reached the level needed to cover our monthly budget.

However, as Alejandra considers the advances we have made in the past few years, she remains confident that God will continue to supply for our needs.

“The most rewarding thing about looking to the past is counting the many lives that God has changed,” she says. “Not only have we touched many children’s lives, many people who have visited us have been transformed.

“We believe that God is moving here every day. We want to bless as many children and people as possible.”

A Reason to Smile

Jack

By Pablo Villagran-

Next week will mark a special Christmas for one of our newest residents, five-year-old Jack Pineda. It will be his first with the Dorie’s Promise family, who he has learned to love since arriving last June.

Jack came to us through a court order after having been sheltered in a government home.

Fortunately, this youngster adapted fairly quickly to his new surroundings. He is a natural extrovert who loves to talk with people and makes friends fast.

We've observed how much happier Jack has been than when he first came here. Now, Jack is always smiling and making jokes with everybody, making him an enjoyable child to have at our home.

Past Christmases weren’t necessarily happy occasions, so Jack’s smile is growing as December 25 draws closer. He is hoping to receive a new ball—although I’m sure he won’t object to other presents.

Jack has many favorites, among them vegetables, beans,  milk and sodas and (like most American kids) food from McDonald’s.

He also likes the color green, and playing soccer, as well as ball tag and visits to Chuck E. Cheese.

One of his Special Mothers, Ericka, says Jack has adjusted well to life at Dorie’s Promise. At first he avoided running and physical activities, but now is eager to exercise, she says. He has improved his eating habits and is now a healthy size and weight.

“He is a very smart child who has good language skills, so it easy to understand him,” Ericka says. “He has done a great job improving his behavior and you can tell that he is happier now.”

Special Mother Eliza says Jack has learned how to share with others and has become very sensitive, loving and obedient. He often makes kind comments to his Special Mothers.

“Like any other child, he sometimes throws tantrums but he calms down when we give him a kiss or hug and then explain to him what he has to do,” Eliza says.

“He enjoys participating in devotionals. He has learned some Bible verses and helps others during worship time. He is very eager to learn more about God.”

Despite this positive news, there is one thing lacking with Jack. He doesn’t have any sponsors. Sponsors are caring individuals who commit to pledges of at least $35 a month. These funds help provide a safe home, education, food, health care and medicines. Most importantly, they provide opportunities for a child’s spiritual development.

However, there is more to sponsorship than giving money. We hope sponsors will develop relationships with their child. This can be done by writing letters, sending e-mails, and other forms of personal interaction—including a personal visit on a mission trip to Guatemala.

If you would like to put an even brighter smile on Jack’s face, click here to learn more about becoming a sponsor.
